Jazz Nights August 12th with Stephen Buck

Stephen received his earliest musical training on clarinet, saxophone and flute in London Ontario graduating with a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario. He played with many of the local big bands and had his first break with his jazz quartet featuring guest artists every Monday night at the Marienbad Restaurant, which was broadcast live for seven years on local radio FM 96.

After stints in Vancouver with the Vancouver Youth Symphony and in Toronto with the U of T Big Band and as lead alto of the Humber College “A” Band, he moved to Europe and began his career there conducting the University of Amsterdam Big Band.

In 1986 he was asked to play flute and tenor sax in the Hamburg production of “Cats” and ended up playing in theatre orchestras for 20 years, as well as a three-year stint with the North German Radio Band. Besides accompanying many thousands of theatre performances Stephen formed a 9 piece swing band called the Flamingos and a Steely Dan revival band. He developed a large repertoire of music for saxophone and church organ and toured Germany performing these pieces. During this time he lived and played in London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Hamburg, New York, Atlanta and Cologne.

Some of the high points of his career were performing Bolero for Leonard Bernstein with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, concerts with the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra in Frankfurt and Paris, and playing live on the Letterman Show in New York in 1996. He has performed and recorded with jazz musicians Herb Geller, Georgie Fame, Barbara Dennerlein, Peter Autschbach, Benny Bailey, Claudio Roditi, Palle Danielson, Lee Konitz , George Gruntz, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Norma Winstone, Cleo Lane, Johnny Dankworth, Bruce Ditmas, Mike Westbrook, Terje Rypdal, Dino Saluzzi, Jiggs Whigham and Della Reese.

Since moving to Kelowna in 2010 Stephen has played with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, Kelowna City Band, Night Owls Orchestra, Spectrum Singers, Jazz Café, Major Mambo, Las Vegas Rat Pack Show, Michael Garding Big Band, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne, and the Okanagan Symphony Wind Ensemble. Stephen has hosted the weekly Jazz Jam at the Rotary Centre for the Arts since August 2011, where he performs regularly on the double bass and saxophones with his sons Simon (drums) and Alex (piano).Stephen Buck
